Detection of Gravitational Waves
LIGO stands for Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, and they have confirmed that they have detected the gravitational waves which are ripples in the fabric of space-time created by the movement of mass, confirming Einstein’s prediction about them about 100 years backs.
Here are the basics:
With two object placed on two different sights, scientist fired a laser at those objects, and when it comes back gravitational waves starches space horizontally and compresses it vertically, ultimately creating a ripple.
The impact:
Before this we were using light in its different forms like UV, infrared or any other frequency for the observation of different phenomenon in nature. But gravitational waves opened a whole new era of looking and observing the universe.
